Caglar Soyuncu rejected Liverpool, Newcastle United to join Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid signed Caglar Soyuncu on a free transfer this summer, with the Turkish international rejecting Liverpool and Newcastle United.

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Caglar Soyuncu rejected proposals from Newcastle United and Liverpool in order to join La Liga club Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window.

The two Premier League clubs wanted to sign the former Leicester City defender in order to add more depth and quality to their defence. Newcastle need to find a quality long-term partner for Sven Botman.

While the Magpies want to tie Fabian Schar to a new contract, they still need his successor in place. So, Soyuncu would have been a quality acquisition on a free transfer. The likes of Schar and Dan Burn are in their thirties and they are unlikely to get any better.

Soyuncu was well-settled in the Premier League, and he could have made an immediate impact at Newcastle. Furthermore, signing a quality player like him on a free transfer would have saved millions in the market for Newcastle. It would have allowed them to improve the other areas of their squad as well.

Meanwhile, Liverpool need to bring in defensive reinforcements, and Soyuncu would have been a useful option on a free transfer. Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have unreliable fitness records and Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk are the only reliable defenders at the club right now.

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool decide to make a move for a central defender when the transfer window reopens in January. They have been linked with a number of defenders in recent months. But Jurgen Klopp failed to bring in the right reinforcements in the summer window.

Liverpool chose to focus on their midfield in the summer, and they need to bring in a quality defender now. Soyuncu will look to establish himself as a key player for Atletico Madrid in the coming seasons. He will hope to compete for major trophies with the Spanish club. He has already proven himself in the Premier League with Leicester City in the past and it is no surprise that the 27-year-old chose to move to La Liga instead of staying in England.
