Barcelona and Fulham might submit offers to sign 24-year-old Portuguese midfielder Florentino Luis from Benfica in 2024.
According to a report by O Jogo, as relayed by Sport Witness, Fulham and Barcelona are interested in Florentino Luis. The Portuguese midfielder has a release clause worth €120 million in his Benfica contract. Meanwhile, he is also a target for Bayern Munich and Nottingham Forest.
Florentino Luis is a native of Lobito in Angola but spent his formative years in Portugal. The 24-year-old is a graduate of Benfica’s fabled youth division and has turned out for AS Monaco and Getafe on loan. But after a slow start to life as a Benfica player, he has become a regular for the Portuguese giants.
The Portuguese midfielder has made four appearances this season while turning out 90 times thus far for Benfica. A holding midfielder by trade, Luis is an adept reader of the game and is a no-nonsense tackler. Meanwhile, the player’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of high-profile clubs like Barcelona.
The Benfica midfielder was the subject of interest from several high-profile clubs in the summer transfer window. Clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Barcelona showed interest in him. And the Catalan giants remain keen on signing Luis. In addition, he is a target for Fulham and a few other clubs.
The Cottagers are in a spot of bother over Joao Palhinha’s long-term future. The Portuguese international nearly joined Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window before a deadline-day move collapsed. The Bundesliga champions remain interested in Palhinha, with Barcelona also interested in the Fulham midfielder. So, Luis is a viable target for Fulham.
As for Barcelona, Oriol Romeu is on the wrong side of 30 and will only be a short-term solution for them. So, the Blaugrana should scour the market for a younger midfielder who can replace Romeu in a few years. Florentino Luis is thus an option worth considering for Barcelona.
