Liverpool retain interest in Real Madrid target Nicolo Barella

Liverpool remain interested in Nicola Barella, with Real Madrid also keen.

According to Fichajes, Premier League giants Liverpool retain interest in Nicolo Barella, who is also on the radar of Spanish behemoths, Real Madrid.

The Inter Milan star is amongst the finest midfielders in Serie A and is a key player in Simone Inzaghi’s game plan. A ball carrier who can not only create goalscoring opportunities but also core bangers, Barella is an all-action star who can make a decisive impact in the middle of the park and the final third.

Liverpool have endured a promising summer where they have more or less revamped their midfield roster. Out went the likes of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. In came Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

Mac Allister and Szoboszlai have already made a significant impact in the Reds’ playing XI and could benefit from another difference maker alongside them. While Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic do make up the numbers, the former is out of contract next summer and could be moved on.

Despite being a player with a different skill-set, Barella could replace Thiago in the Liverpool setup, if Jurgen Klopp changes his system. Not only is Barella a neat passer but is also an able set-piece taker.

The Reds have a formidable frontline with the likes of Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and the upcoming Ben Doak all vying for a starting spot. Bringing in Barella alongside Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold is akin to providing the attackers with unlimited goalscoring opportunities.

Inter are not keen to sell their star man and view him as a key member of their roster. However, an offer of around €70 million could make them weak in the knees. We saw that Liverpool are not averse to splashing the cash should the right player become available. If Jurgen Klopp seriously wants the Italian, the money appears there to make it happen.

The major obstacle, however, will come from Real Madrid, who are also keen on the Italian. Los Blancos beat Liverpool to Aurelien Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham in the last two summer transfer windows. Sailors believe that bad things happen in threes and being a port city, Liverpool will be wary of that being applied in Barella’s case.
