OGC Nice sporting director reveals Hugo Lloris’ agent tried to get his Tottenham contract terminated while insisting on never making an offer.
There’s still some rumblings surrounding the Hugo Lloris situation at Tottenham, as the £100,000-a-week looks set to spend time here without playing too much. With the Carabao Cup the likeliest tournament for the French veteran to feature, Spurs are already out of it.
Before the summer window commenced, Lloris appeared as one of the first ones to leave the club. The keeper would have thought about another project where he could play regularly, but the offers he received weren’t up to the mark.
After failing to move on deadline day, Tottenham contemplated terminating his contract. The £100,000-a-week has been an important part of the last decade at Spurs, and it’s a difficult task to part ways like that.
Hence, as Lloris failed to find a move, Tottenham are open to keeping him until January. They could let him keep earning the £100,000-a-week salary at the club. There were stories about interested clubs ranging from Saudi sides, Newcastle United and OGC Nice.
The latter remains the most important subject of his story around the last weeks. As per reports, Nice were reportedly interested in taking him, but Lloris explained why he snubbed a move. Their sporting director, Florent Ghisolfi, revealed to Nice-Matin via Sport Witness that they never made a concrete offer.
Ghisolfi said, “It’s a story that shows a lot about the current state of football and the impact of social media. In the last few minutes of the transfer window, an agent tried to get him to terminate his contract at Tottenham with the Nice carrot on the end on the end of the stick. He then leaked the story of a refusal to get it. He didn’t refuse Nice because the club never concretely offered him anything.”
The main focus is that the two parties were in touch about a move, but Lloris may not have wanted to take on a secondary role. Ghisolfi also revealed that the keeper’s agent tried terminating the Tottenham contract. Such a move would have made a move to Nice or somewhere else easier.
Ghisolfi continued with his comments as he insisted things could still change, and Nice might even think about a potential offer soon.
He continued, “As I told him at the end of last season, we chose [Marcin] Bulka. We never imagined, financially or on a football level, the idea of Hugo coming in as a number two at Nice. But he’s a kid from the region, he loves the club. It’s a project that could correspond him with the right timing. We have him in a corner of our head.”
Lloris would like to make a clear decision on his future, considering he’s already entered the twilight years of his stellar career. The French World Cup-winning captain will want to keep playing at a decent level. He will continue to look for a new opportunity, potentially even with Nice.
