Chelsea retain Ollie Watkins interest

Chelsea are reportedly considering a January move to sign Aston Villa’s star striker, Ollie Watkins.

According to a report from GIVEMESPORT, Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins is one of three players that Chelsea are considering signing in January.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino had to conduct a busy summer transfer market as he set about completely overhauling the Chelsea squad according to his needs. While the Blued signed plenty of players this summer, their squad still seems to be lacking quality in a couple of key areas.

Their main issue last year was scoring goals, as they managed just 38 Premier League strikes. Unfortunately, they have not quite found the solution yet. Other than their 3-0 triumph against Luton Town, Chelsea have not looked prolific enough to put away their scoring chances so far.

Although Raheem Sterling has displayed flashes of brilliance, Pochettino’s side still seems lacking in the final third. Nicolas Jackson is currently leading the line but is proving to be hit-and-miss when it comes to finding the back of the net.

Of course, they still have Christopher Nkunku to return to the squad once he recovers from injury. But it seems as if Chelsea will be on the hunt for another striker come January. They considered plenty of targets throughout the summer, and it seems they still retain their interest in Aston Villa’s Watkins.

The 27-year-old England international has been a revelation for the Villans ever since the arrival of Unai Emery at Villa Park last season. He finished with 16 goals across all competitions, including 15 in the Premier League. His red-hot scoring form in the second half of the campaign was the driving force behind Unai Emery’s side qualifying for the Conference League, and was on the radar of Manchester United this past summer.

Watkins may not be the flashiest name. But the Blues need to add more goals to their attack, and the Aston Villa mainstay looks capable of doing that and bringing the best out of goal-scoring wingers around him.

A complete forward with pace, strength, work rate, and clever movement, he would be a very good signing for Chelsea. But Aston Villa may not entertain losing their star striker at any price in the middle of the campaign.

Watkins has started the new season with three goals and two assists in his opening six games across all competitions, including a fantastic hat-trick against Hibernian in the first leg of the Conference League play-off, proving he is a pivotal part of what Unai Emery is trying to build at Villa Park. But with just two years remaining on his contract, perhaps the Villans could be forced into a sale if the player refuses to sign a new one.
