Liverpool express interest in Kalvin Phillips

Liverpool are interested in Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips

According to 90min, Premier League giants Liverpool are interested in securing the services of Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips in the ongoing summer transfer window.

The Reds went into the summer of 2023 knowing full well that a midfield revamp was needed. While the trio of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo have been brought in, Jurgen Klopp could do with a couple more additions in the middle of the park.

With just days to go before the summer transfer window shuts, time is running out for Liverpool to add to their roster. Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch and Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure are on their radar with Manchester City’s Phillips now also on the list.

The 27-year-old was one of the finest midfielders in the Premier League while at Leeds United. Buoyed by a brilliant showing for England at the 2020 Euros, Phillips earned himself a big-money move to Manchester City last summer.

However, the move to The Etihad has not worked out as expected for the Englishman. Plagued by injuries and inconsistency, the midfield star has been limited to a mere handful of appearances. This season has fared a little better for the Englishman with him starting on the bench in all four games so far.

Phillips admitted earlier this summer that he is keen to stay put and fight for his place under Pep Guardiola. However, at 27, he should be playing regularly rather than settling for a spot on the bench. It would be a shame to see one of England’s best players throw away his career for a supporting role.

A fresh challenge could do Phillips wonders and reignite what is now a flagging career. Jurgen Klopp could help the 27-year-old revitalise his fortunes and return to his best. Given the Reds’ need for a midfield general, the move could prove to be a win-win for all parties.

While Phillips would be a good addition, it is debatable if he will solve all of Liverpool’s problems. The Reds don’t just need a dynamic midfielder but also another number six. While Phillips is talented, he cannot be expected to don all hats.
