Levi Colwill agrees six-year contract with Chelsea

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has agreed a new long-term contract with the club, putting paid to Liverpool’s hopes of signing him.

Levi Colwill has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent weeks. But the 20-year-old has decided to commit his long-term future to Chelsea. As per Daily Mail, the youngster will sign £100,000 ]-a-week contract with the Blues.

The 20-year-old is considered as one of the best young defensive talents in English football, and he could develop into a key player for Chelsea in the coming season. Colwill was on loan at Brighton last season and he was quite impressive for the Seagulls. Brighton have tried to sign the player permanently this summer, but they were knocked back in their approach.

Liverpool were hoping to bring in the 20-year-old defender as an alternative to players like Joel Matip and Joe Gomez. Both players were quite underwhelming last season, and Liverpool need to bring in a quality central defender.

Meanwhile, Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has been ruled out for a number of weeks with a ligament injury. So it is understandable why the Blues were determined to keep the 20-year-old defender at the club.

Colwill is likely to get ample first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge next season, and it remains to be seen whether he can establish himself as a regular starter for Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino has a proven track record of nurturing talented young players into established stars, and he could play a key role in the development of the Chelsea prodigy.

Colwill will be hoping to establish himself as a regular starter for his country in the coming seasons as well, and he needs regular game time. It is fair to assume that Chelsea have promised him regular first-team action before the two parties agreed on a long-term £100,000-a-week contract.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if Liverpool switch their attention towards other targets after missing out on Colwill. The Reds have done well to improve their midfield in recent weeks and will need to bring in a quality central defender to address their defensive vulnerabilities before the summer transfer window closes.
