Fabio Carvalho opened up on his equation with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, insisting that the pair barely spoke while at the club.
Under Jurgen Klopp, there have been many transfer targets for which Liverpool have gone to distance to make it happen. For instance, their prolonged pursuit of Virgil van Dijk while at Southampton enraged the Saints, and they made an official complaint to the Premier League.
Six months later, Van Dijk was a Liverpool player; the rest is history. Among other targets, the chase for Fabio Carvalho had the hint of a similar pursuit. Liverpool had tried all they could to sign the then-Fulham youngster, but the Cottagers did all they could to evade.
The Reds eventually signed him on for a much lower fee than his valuation suggested. Carvalho entered the frame as one of the exciting youngsters and joined the likes of Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic at Liverpool.
His late winner against Newcastle United at Anfield looked like a kickstart to his time at the club, and he even scored the very next game. However, that was the end of things, as Klopp continued to push the youngster down the pecking order as Carvalho’s season faded away.

His overall performance indicated that the 20-year-old had a modest season and played 13 times in the Premier League. As soon as the summer window opened, Liverpool shipped him off to RB Leipzig after a period of discussions with the German side.
Carvalho has now opened up on his equation with Klopp, and by his comments that appeared on Manuel Veth’s tweet, the pair barely spoke. The 20-year-old gave mixed messages with those quotes but did not rue the relationship with the Liverpool manager.
Carvalho said, “I don’t really speak to him, to be fair. He didn’t really give me any advice. I just had to learn as I go, and I feel that it is better for me to mature anyway.”
In hindsight, Carvalho should have stayed with Liverpool or at least in the Premier League. West Ham were interested in the 20-year-old but chose to join Leipzig instead. He can take his game to the next level but might have also developed in Merseyside.
Whether that was a club decision or Carvalho’s call remains the question. If he fails to shine at Leipzig, the 20-year-old could jeopardise his promising career. However, the German side have a famed history of developing raw talents, and even if he doesn’t play too much, there’s a lot to learn at the Bundesliga club.
