Manchester United have granted Reading permission to engage with the representatives of Charlie Savage as he inches closer to a move.
According to Football Insider, Charlie Savage is inching closer to signing for Reading after Manchester United granted the League One club permission to make contact. Ruben Selles’s side will now talk to the 20-year-old’s representatives to advance in pursuing the midfielder. Meanwhile, the two clubs already have an agreement over the transfer.
Charlie Savage was once considered a highly-rated prospect, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believing in his talents. The Norwegian also gave him his UEFA Champions League debut, albeit for a minute, but it held significance.
Yet, as time has progressed, Savage has found himself increasingly away from the first team, and there seems to be no way for the 20-year-old to find a breakthrough. His exclusion from the 31-man pre-season squad to the US hinted at a possible departure.
Savage has two years left on his deal, with Manchester United likely to sell him now and cull their youth squad. There are incomings planned for the youth side, as Tyler and Jack Fletcher are pencilled in to join from Manchester City.
Some other players may also leave in this window to find opportunities elsewhere. Reading are keen on Savage, as reports emerged about their approach to Manchester United to take the 20-year-old midfield prospect.
Selles views Savage as the ideal midfielder for his system as he begins a squad rebuild at the League One club. The 20-year-old’s recent experience in the division with Forest Green Rovers also helps, having played for them since January.
He made 15 appearances, including 13 starts, but could not help them avoid relegation to League Two. Manchester United have granted Reading permission to speak with Savage’s representatives and move ahead. Meanwhile, the two clubs already have an agreement over a deal.
Reading will now discuss the project and contracts with the player, hoping to convince him. There is also interest from other EFL clubs, including those from the Championship. But any decision will depend on how much regular football the 20-year-old plays.
At Reading, he could establish himself as an important player, possibly a regular starter, which would help him re-establish his fledgling career. Manchester United will not rue their decision too much. But they might insert some clause that may come to benefit in the future.
