Manchester United fail with approach to sign Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United recently approached Barcelona to discuss a possible move for Frenkie de Jong, albeit unsuccessfully.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Frenkie de Jong is the subject of interest from Manchester United again. But the Red Devils have failed with an approach to sign the 26-year-old. And Barcelona will not entertain any offers for the midfielder in the ongoing transfer window.

Frenkie de Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019. And since then, the Dutch midfielder has been one of the best performers for the Blaugrana. Apart from a few months where he was in and out of the starting lineup, he has proven his credentials at Spotify Camp Nou.

The 26-year-old has made 51 appearances for the Netherlands while finding the back of the net twice. Meanwhile, de Jong has turned out 183 times for Barcelona while chipping in with 15 goals and 21 assists. But Barcelona’s never-ending financial issues have constantly left his future in the air. And the player has been a target for Manchester United for a long time.

Manchester United attempted to secure de Jong’s services last summer but failed to land him. While Barcelona would have agreed to a deal, the Dutchman did not want to depart from Spotify Camp Nou. And Manchester United eventually signed Casemiro to bolster the midfield unit. But  recent reports have painted a contradictory picture of their continued interest in the player.

While some have suggested that de Jong remains a target for Manchester United, others have claimed the Red Devils are no longer pursuing him. But Mundo Deportivo reckons the 26-year-old is still on Manchester United’s wishlist. And they have added that the English heavyweights have approached Barcelona for him.

But Barcelona will not entertain any offers for de Jong, who does not want to leave the Catalan club either. That will hand a blow to Manchester United’s prospects, as they aim to fortify their midfield department in the ongoing transfer window.

Manchester United will anyway prioritise signing a goalkeeper and a striker before bringing a midfielder to Old Trafford. And with Andre Onana closing in on joining the Red Devils, they will set their sights on signing a top-class striker in the coming days.
