Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing 23-year-old Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, valued at £24 million.
According to Evening Standard, Manchester United are eyeing up a move for 23-year-old goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic this summer. The New England Revolution goalkeeper is valued at £24 million by the MLS club.
It is no secret that Manchester United need to bring in a quality goalkeeper during the summer transfer window, and Petrovic could prove to be a useful option. The futures of David de Gea and Dean Henderson are in major doubt right now. So the Red Devils might need two keepers this summer.
While David de Gea’s contract expires at the end of this month, Henderson needs to leave the club in order to play regular first-team football. De Gea has not signed an extension with Manchester United so far. Meanwhile, the Spaniard’s form has been quite underwhelming recently.
Even if he stays at Manchester United, there are no guarantees that he will be a regular starter at Old Trafford next season. Furthermore, his style of play does not fit in well with Erik ten Hag’s philosophy either. The Dutch manager prefers goalkeepers with impressive distribution skills, and de Gea has been quite mediocre with the ball at his feet.
Meanwhile, Henderson has struggled for game time at Old Trafford, and he needs to move on for the benefit of his own career. He needs to play regularly at this stage of his career and is unlikely to get those opportunities at Manchester United. The player was on loan at Nottingham Forest this past season, and they have been credited with an interest in signing the player permanently.
Petrovic could prove to be a useful acquisition for the Old Trafford outfit, especially for £24 million. But they should look to bring in a top-class goalkeeper along with him. Manchester United have been linked with Andre Onana from Inter Milan.
The 27-year-old has been outstanding for the Italian club and could be the ideal first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester United. The Cameroonian goalkeeper played under ten Hag at Ajax and should be able to fit into the Dutch manager’s system seamlessly.
Manchester United did reasonably well under ten Hag last season as they managed to get back into the UEFA Champions League. Ten Hag helped them win a domestic trophy — the EFL Cup — as well.
Manchester United will be hoping to compete for the league title next season, and they need to plug the weaknesses in their squad in order to compete with clubs like Manchester City and Arsenal. Players like Petrovic will certainly add more quality and depth to the side and help Manchester United compete on all fronts.
