Barcelona prioritising loan move for Giovani Lo Celso

Barcelona will reportedly prioritise signing Giovani Lo Celso on loan from Tottenham in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Giovani Lo Celso is a priority target for Barcelona. And the newly-crowned La Liga champions have already submitted an offer to sign the Tottenham midfielder. They want to sign the 27-year-old on loan in the summer transfer window while including a purchase option worth €15 million.

Giovani Lo Celso has had a bizarre career since arriving in Europe several years ago. The Argentine international’s first stint was with Paris Saint-Germain, but he barely made his mark at the French club. He then joined Real Betis, where he went from strength to strength before moving to Tottenham Hotspur.

The North London club initially signed the 27-year-old on loan before completing a permanent deal worth €32 million in July 2020. But the player failed to stamp his authority at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before they loaned him out to Villarreal for the last 18 months. And Lo Celso’s stock has risen again during his spell with the Yellow Submarine.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner will return to Tottenham when his loan stint with Villarreal ends this summer. But he does not have a future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And Barcelona will look to prise him away from the North London club in the summer transfer window.

The Catalan giants have already bolstered their midfield unit by securing the services of Ilkay Gundogan, although an official announcement is pending. But they are not done yet and want to sign another midfielder this summer. And the versatile Lo Celso has emerged as a viable target for Barcelona.

Recent reports have also suggested that a swap deal involving Clement Lenglet might be on the cards. But the report by Fichajes makes it look like Barcelona will hash out a separate deal for the Argentine international. And they view the Tottenham midfielder as a priority target this summer. In addition, they have already offered a loan deal to the North London club.

Barcelona will foot his wage bill worth €6 million while including a purchase option of €15 million. So Tottenham will unlikely recoup the €32 million they paid to sign the 27-year-old. But it will be interesting to see if they are ready to accept Barcelona’s loan bid to secure Lo Celso’s services.
