Mikel Arteta pushing Arsenal to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Arsenal are keen on Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, with Mikel Arteta reportedly pushing the club to sign the experienced midfielder.

According to Fichajes, Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer. Mikel Arteta is reportedly pushing the club to make a move for the Lazio star and could offer more money than his market price to ward off competition.

The Arsenal midfield juggernaut has a new name on the list of potential targets. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic got added to Mikel Arteta’s shortlist of players who could join them this summer. The Gunners have been extremely busy since the transfer window opened, with the Serb coming across as a realistic target.

He is realistic because he has a decent price tag owing to his contract length at Lazio. The Roman club’s president Claudio Lotito has been hard to negotiate with. But the circumstances surrounding the 28-year-old midfielder could force the hand of the Serie A club.

Milinkovic-Savic has long since desired a different challenge, possibly outside of Italy. Considering the widespread interest from Premier League sides, he could open his doors to a move to England if there are suitable offers.

Arsenal have chased the 28-year-old for a significant period. Last summer, they were reportedly unwilling to pay the exorbitant price Lazio demanded. But the situation has drastically changed with the Serb at the Serie A club.

As per multiple reports, his agent, Mateja Kezman, reportedly promised Lazio to get a minimum of €40 million bids. Yet, the Spanish outlet reckons Arsenal could shell out €50 million or more to secure the midfielder. They continue suggesting that Arteta is pushing the club to land the Serbian international, possibly to replace Granit Xhaka.

The Swiss midfielder has all but agreed a move to Bayer Leverkusen, with the move likely to get a green light once Arsenal sign a new midfielder. They are chasing Declan Rice on priority, but complications have arisen following Manchester City’s late involvement.

However, Arteta will have another dilemma if Thomas Partey decides to leave this summer. There are rumours of interest from Serie A clubs as well as Saudi clubs. If the Ghanaian moves out, then Arsenal would need another midfielder, with Southampton’s Romeo Lavia emerging as a key target.

Yet, if Arteta decides to sign Lavia and move on to an experienced professional, then signing Milinkovic-Savic makes sense. If he views the 28-year-old Serie A midfielder as an attacking midfielder, then Arsenal have plenty of options internally.

Hence, this news about Milinkovic-Savic might have to develop more to become more realistic. Arsenal does need midfield reinforcements, but they might not move away from their strategy of buying young.
