Barcelona set sights on Giovani Lo Celso

Barcelona might launch the offensive to sign 27-year-old Argentine midfielder Giovani Lo Celso from Tottenham this summer.

According to a report by Mundo Deportivo, as relayed by Sport Witness, Giovani Lo Celso is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The newly-crowned La Liga champions are considering signing the 27-year-old. And the former Real Betis midfielder might leave Tottenham in the summer transfer window.

Giovani Lo Celso has been a curious case throughout his professional career in Europe thus far. The Argentine international’s first stint in Europe was with Paris Saint-Germain, but he achieved little success. He then spent a couple of years with Real Betis, where he rose to prominence before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth €32 million.

While the 27-year-old showed flashes of brilliance at Tottenham, he never became a pivotal figure for them. And Lo Celso has spent the last 18 months on loan at Villarreal, where he has resurrected his stuttering career. But injuries restricted him to just 29 appearances this past season. Now set to return to Tottenham, his future at the North London club is uncertain. And the situation has alerted Barcelona.

Barcelona will delve into the market for a midfielder in the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants are losing Sergio Busquets, while Franck Kessie faces an uncertain future at Spotify Camp Nou. So while Ilkay Gundogan or Sofyan Amrabat will likely replace Busquets, another midfield reinforcement is the need of the hour.

Several players, including Alex Baena, have thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar. And Giovani Lo Celso is also a viable target for the Blaugrana. The versatile Tottenham midfielder is well-settled in La Liga and should not take long to settle down at the Catalan club. And unlike Baena, he will not cost a bomb.

Tottenham will unlikely recoup anything close to the €32 million they paid to sign the 27-year-old. So the Argentine international will be a cut-price option to bolster the Barcelona midfield. And amid the never-ending financial mess, Lo Celso might become an attractive target for Barcelona.

It will be interesting to see how much Tottenham will demand for the former Real Betis midfielder. For now, Lo Celso has emerged as a target for Barcelona, with a move in the summer transfer window on the cards.
