Real Madrid will not pay more than €60 million to sign Harry Kane

Real Madrid are reportedly unwilling to pay more than €60 million to land Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane this summer.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has identified wantaway Tottenham striker Harry Kane as an ideal replacement for the outgoing Karim Benzema. But the Merengues won’t pay over the odds to acquire the England skipper’s services, with the maximum ceiling for the transfer set at €60 million.

Tottenham’s all-time record goalscorer’s contract runs out in June 2024. Therefore, it is likely he will be sold this summer so they avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer. Spurs’ reliance on Kane cannot be overstated.

With numerous big European teams circling for his signature, though, everything is pointing towards him leaving the club. Spurs have had a really disappointing season. Despite their 4-1 victory over Leeds on Sunday, they finished eighth, missing out on European football for the first time since the 2009/10 season.

But Kane certainly had another impressive campaign. The England international netted 30 goals in 38 Premier League appearances, equalling his personal best goalscoring record. This tally makes Kane only the second player ever to reach the 30-goal landmark more than once.

The England captain has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, who have made him their priority signing ahead of the summer transfer window. However, it seems Erik ten Hag could face some heated competition for Kane, with Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid registering an interest in the 29-year-old.

Real Madrid’s urge to sign a centre-forward comes on the back of the fact that star striker Karim Benzema’s future is now up in the air. The Frenchman has received a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, worth up to €200 million for two years, along with other benefits, with many Spanish reports claiming that Benzema is, at this point, closer to leaving Real Madrid than staying put.

The Merengues also hold an edge over Manchester United in the race for Kane, as Spurs are exploring the opportunity of selling their prized striker to a foreign club so he does not join a Premier League rival. However, the situation is complicated for Real Madrid as they have not budgeted a big chunk of their finances for a striker this summer.

Due to this reason, Florentino Perez could look to structure a Kane deal for less than €60 million. Los Blancos will also not entertain any bidding war and would move on to other targets on the shortlist should Spurs hold a tight stance on their striker.

A low-cost option like Liverpool veteran Roberto Firmino, who is available on a free transfer, will then become their top priority. Either way, it looks like Real Madrid have decided that another striker is needed. It’s now time for the club hierarchy and Ancelotti to make a decision on who that forward should be.
