Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing 21-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Kouadio Kone.
According to a report from SportBILD, as relayed by Sport Witness, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are in the race to sign 21-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Kouadio Kone. And the two clubs have also made enquiries to the Bundesliga club regarding a potential summer move.
Kouadio Kone has been a key player for the Bundesliga club this season, and he could prove to be a quality long-term acquisition for Chelsea. The player has been linked with Manchester United as well.
The Blues desperately need midfield reinforcements. Enzo Fernandez is the only long-term midfield option at Graham Potter’s disposal right now. Players like Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Conor Gallagher have been linked with moves away from the club in the summer, while N’Golo Kante will be a free agent.
While Kante might sign a new deal and Kovacic is a key figure, Graham Potter is under pressure to bring in multiple central midfield reinforcements. And Kone has emerged as a viable long-term target for Chelsea.
The 21-year-old can operate as a defensive midfielder as well as a central midfielder. He will help tighten up things in the middle of the park and add defensive discipline to the side. The 21-year-old will help protect the central defenders and allow the creative midfielders to operate with more freedom.
Kone has the potential to develop into a world-class player, and playing in the Premier League will only accelerate his development. The report further states that the 21-year-old midfielder dreams of moving to England. And it remains to be seen whether his desire to play in the Premier League is fulfilled in the summer.
Chelsea certainly have the finances to convince Borussia Monchengladbach. And it remains to be seen whether they are prepared to submit a big money offer for the Frenchman after submitting an enquiry for him. Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain have no shortage of resources either, and the Blues face stiff competition from them.
The French champions need to add more quality in the middle of the park as well. And Kone could be tempted to return to his home country with a move to PSG. Furthermore, Les Parisiensn are more or less guaranteed to play in the Champions League next season. But Chelsea are currently in the mid-table position and are unlikely to finish in the top four.
