Tottenham keen to wrap up Eric Dier extension

Tottenham are keen to extend Eric Dier’s contract at the club, with the defender considered vital to Antonio Conte’s plans.

Football Insider says Tottenham want to wrap up a new extension for Eric Dier in the coming weeks. The 29-year-old English international has been a mainstay in Antonio Conte’s side and is considered vital to the Italian manager’s plans.

Eric Dier is steadily showing the form that once made him one of the best defenders in England. The 29-year-old centre-back has been an important player at Tottenham, having racked up around 350 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Dier was part of Sporting CP’s youth system and returned to England in 2014 when Tottenham paid £5 million for him. While he was originally a midfielder by trade, the 29-year-old English international has transformed himself into a central defender.

While he has largely impressed in his spell at the back, he might remain there for the remainder of his career. At Tottenham, he took on the mantle at the back after the departures of former custodians Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

Antonio Conte considers Dier’s presence vital and wants the club to prioritise a contract extension for the 29-year-old English international. In addition, the Italian wants to tie down the futures of his senior stars, including Harry Kane, who could sign a new contract.

The report insists Dier is in line for a two-year extension to his contract that expires in 2024. He will certainly receive a major pay rise and remain at the club for the next three years at least. Conte usually weighs in on his senior and most experienced stars, but the Italian is also searching for new options to shore up the backline.

Tottenham’s defence isn’t exactly watertight and have shown plenty of vulnerability this season. They remain in the market for new options, with Wolves star Max Kilman linked with a move to north London. Other stars from European clubs are also getting regular mentions, but Conte might prioritise Premier League experience.

Signing Dier to a new deal will provide Tottenham with stability and continuity. The 29-year-old English international knows the system at the club very well and could help bridge the gap with the next generation of centre-backs coming through the market or the academy.
