Liverpool are reportedly keen on signing RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, a target for Manchester City, in a record deal.
According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are eyeing up a big-money move for RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol at the end of the season. The 20-year-old Croatian defender is also a target for Manchester City.
Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have been extremely underwhelming this season. So Jurgen Klopp needs to bring in a quality defender at the end of the season. Gvardiol has been linked with a move to Premier League giants Manchester City as well. And it remains to be seen whether Liverpool can beat their Premier League rivals to his signature.
The 20-year-old has previously admitted that he is a Liverpool fan. And the opportunity to join the Reds could be an exciting proposition for him. “It would definitely be Liverpool,” the player said when asked about the team he dreamed of playing for when he was growing up. I watched a lot of Liverpool games with my father and we covered every season in detail. It’s a club that has stayed in my heart.”
Gvardiol was linked with a move to Chelsea in the summer transfer window. But RB Leipzig refused to sell him back then. It will be interesting to see if the German outfit are prepared to cash in on the player at the end of the season.
The highly-rated centre-back is likely to cost a premium. And Liverpool are prepared to break their transfer record to sign the youngster. Gvardiol was exceptional for his country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar as well. He could have a Virgil van Dijk-esque impact at Anfield next season.
The 20-year-old was undoubtedly one of the best defenders in the tournament, and he has a big future ahead of him. Working with a world-class coach like Jurgen Klopp could help him fulfil his potential and develop into a world-class player. Furthermore, moving to Liverpool would be a step up in the player’s career.
That said, Liverpool might not qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season, and that could be a major blow in their pursuit of the Croatian international. Gvardiol will want to join a club in the Champions League. And Manchester City can certainly offer him that opportunity. Furthermore, the defending champions have more financial resources compared to Liverpool as well.
