Manchester United could sell Scott McTominay in the summer to bolster their budget, with the midfielder out of favour at Old Trafford.

Football Insider reckons Scott McTominay could be sold in the summer by Manchester United to bolster their transfer budget. The club’s board reportedly informed Erik ten Hag he might need to offload players to add money to their summer kitty, with the Scotsman one of those unwanted by the Dutch manager. And £25 million might do the trick for the Red Devils.

Scott McTominay made his debut for Manchester United in 2017 against Arsenal, marking another achievement for the club’s academy. However, while he has made around 194 appearances for the Red Devils, his long-term future may have come into doubt following the recent revamp under Erik ten Hag.

Unfortunately for McTominay, he was part of the club’s strangest period, as they are in the sixth season without a trophy. Ten Hag is on course to revive those fortunes by building a competitive team as he looks forward to a summer spree, where he intends to bring notable names.

While there are emerging reports of a takeover, at least two prospective owners are in the background, angling to take control of Manchester United. The question remains how much money these prospective new owners would commit towards Ten Hag’s summer spree.

The report suggests the board has informed ten Hag to offload a few players to bolster his spending budget. Manchester United have notable names like Victor Osimhen and Harry Kane, among other top-rated stars, on their radar. Considering the manager will have eyes on strengthening different positions, a considerable outlay could be on the cards.

One of the players that may move out is McTominay. The 26-year-old Scottish midfielder is out of favour under ten Hag, so the chances of selling him are high. Manchester United reportedly seek £25 million for the player, with several clubs interested.

Manchester United blocked interest from Newcastle United in January, as ten Hag wanted to have him for the remainder of the season. The manager may have wanted to keep squad depth intact, and it was the right call after they lost Christian Eriksen to a severe injury.

While Marcel Sabitzer was signed on loan to cover for Eriksen, McTominay has found game time hard to come by. Despite making 24 appearances across all competitions, he has only completed the full ninety minutes eight times. Whether clubs like Newcastle United retain their interest is the question. But there could be others who might show admiration.

The other big question is whether clubs will pay Manchester United’s £25 million valuation. While the midfielder is down in the pecking order, the Red Devils consider his immense experience in the Premier League valuable. Hence they want their money for the 26-year-old.
