Newcastle United eyeing summer move for Piero Hincapie

Newcastle United are eyeing a summer move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, with Tottenham also interested.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United are plotting a summer move for highly-rated defender Piero Hincapie. The Magpies do not wish to get into a transfer tussle this month and are open to waiting until the next window to sign the 21-year-old defender, who is also a target for Tottenham.

Piero Hincapie is having a wonderful breakthrough season at Bayer Leverkusen. After a slow start to the campaign, where he regularly featured off the bench, the Ecuadorian has steadily become a firm choice for the Bundesliga club in recent months.

He also showed his worth at the World Cup, starting all of Ecuador’s games in Qatar. The 21-year-old is only at the beginning of his promising career, and many high-profile clubs have already shown interest in signing him.

Earlier in December, Arsenal and Tottenham were all interested in the left-footed centre-back. The Gunners have since signed Jakub Kiwior, so they are certainly out of the running. There are many other clubs silently keeping tabs on the 21-year-old Bundesliga defender.

Bayer Leverkusen are keen to hold him at least until the summer. Tottenham reportedly made a verbal offer for Hincapie, but the Bundesliga outfit rejected it. Antonio Conte is keen on bringing in a defensive reinforcement, particularly on the left side of the pitch, which has proven problematic for Tottenham this season.

Newcastle United are also in the hunt. But the Magpies do not wish to enter into a transfer tussle late in this window. Having already signed Anthony Gordon this month in a substantial deal, Eddiethe Magpies unlikely to spend big again before Tuesday’s deadline.

They may have learned about Leverkusen’s stance on the 21-year-old Bundesliga defender and decided against bidding this month. So Newcastle United will come into the frame during the summer to land the 21-year-old.

For now, Howe has plenty of options in central defence, with Fabian Schar and Sven Botman his first-choice centre-backs. They will enter the summer with renewed vigour to improve their squad and possibly see through a few sales, including that of Jamaal Lascelles.

That departure could open the space for a new centre-back to come in. Moreover, in January, there is hardly any time left in the window. Hence Bayer Leverkusen may not find a suitable replacement. So Tottenham might not sign Hincapie from the Bundesliga club this month either.
