Chelsea are reportedly readying a new bid to sign Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez before the January transfer window closes.
According to a report from Portuguese publication Record, Chelsea are set to return with an improved offer for 21-year-old World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez.
Enzo Fernandez was outstanding for Argentina during the recently-concluded World Cup campaign in Qatar, and he was chosen as the best young player of the tournament. There is no doubt that the 21-year-old has the quality to develop into a world-class midfielder. And he would be a superb long-term investment for the Blues.
Chelsea are in desperate need of central midfield reinforcements, especially with players like Jorginho and N’Golo Kante approaching the end of their respective contracts. And the former will likely depart from Stamford Bridge as a free agent.
Chelsea have been trying to sign Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo. But they have not managed to agree on a deal with the Seagulls yet. It seems they want to sign the 21-year-old Argentine midfielder as well.
It will be interesting to see if they are willing to pay the asking price for Enzo Fernandez this time around. The Blues held talks with Benfica regarding a move for the midfielder at the start of this month. But the transfer collapsed because they were not willing to pay the reported asking price.
The Argentina midfielder has a release clause of €120 million in his contract. And Benfica have been adamant that they will not let him leave for less. Chelsea will have to smash their transfer record to sign the World Cup winner. And it remains to be seen whether club owner Todd Boehly is willing to go the distance for the top midfield target.
Chelsea have been incredibly active in the transfer market this month. And they have improved their attack with multiple signings like Mykhaylo Mudryk, Joao Felix and Noni Madueke. The Blues have also brought in a quality young centre-back in Benoit Badiashile.

Chelsea have spent more than any other Premier League club since the start of the season. And it remains to be seen whether they are prepared to spend a massive amount of money to sign Fernandez now.
