Liverpool could be a late entrant to make a move for Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves in this January transfer window.
As per a report in Football Insider, Liverpool might be interested in making a late attempt to snap up Ruben Neves from Wolves. The Reds have struggled to match up to their high standards throughout the season.
The Reds have stressed the need for another midfielder this month having already splashed their money to welcome Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. Neves has long been linked with a move outside of the Midlands as he has been pretty consistent for his team.
The Portuguese has maintained steady growth over the last couple of seasons and has established himself as one of the most sought-after young midfielders.
Klopp’s need amplified following their recent traumatic display against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League. The Portuguese midfielder has 18 months left to run on his current deal and talks over a new contract haven’t progressed yet.
Wolves have already struck a deal to sign Joao Gomes from Flamengo according to Fabrizio Romano and the midfielder’s arrival could signal the end of Neves at the Molineux.
Romano tweeted, “Brazilian midfielder João Gomes will fly to England in the next hours in order to undergo medical tests and sign as new Wolverhampton player. Here we go, it’s confirmed.
Wolves will pay €17m to Flamengo — also Pablo Sarabia deal will be sealed next week.”
Despite these developments, Liverpool would still need to arrange funds as their January transfer kitty seems to be exhausted due to their recent signing of Gakpo.
Wolves will demand a handsome fee and it could eclipse the £50 million barrier as things stand. Klopp would be able to get another look at the player who is expected to be involved in the Wolves’ FA Cup third-round replay with Liverpool on their home turf.
Liverpool arranged a deadline day transfer for Arthur but that hasn’t panned out the way they would have expected while the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have been pretty inconsistent. A move for Neves could be accelerated in a bid to salvage Liverpool’s season.
