Arsenal, Tottenham vying for Ferran Torres

North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are vying for versatile Barcelona forward Ferran Torres in the January window.

According to Fichajes, Ferran Torres is reportedly available for sale in the winter window, with many clubs vying for his signature. North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are considering approaching, with both sides seeking attacking reinforcements next month.

A year ago, Barcelona president Joan Laporta described Ferran Torres as a dream signing, which Xavi Hernandez requested the club’s board to fulfill. Despite a promising start, the Spanish international is somewhat out of sorts in the team, and talk of an early exit looms large on the forward.

Barcelona paid €55 million last January to sign him, but the summer arrival of Raphinha and the subsequent renewal of Ousmane Dembele has pushed him down the pecking order. The versatile Barcelona forward is struggling to get a consistent run of games in the team and seemingly does not fit the system under Xavi.

Naturally, there’s plenty of talk of an imminent move away from the club, as Barcelona could seek to recoup a significant chunk of the €55 million paid to Manchester City. Xavi reportedly wants a new midfielder, right back, and an inside forward, with Torres one of the few existing players likely to make way for new incomings.

Barcelona’s financial situation would make it difficult for the club to invest fresh funds into new signings. Hence the only way out is to sell existing stars and build on a transfer budget. Torres could be made available for less than the €55 million Barcelona paid a year ago.

The idea of signing the versatile Barcelona forward has attracted plenty of interest, with Juventus one of the sides keeping tabs. Torres could also opt for returning to the Premier League, where he did not fulfil his promise. He certainly has plenty of interest, but Arsenal and Tottenham could pique his attention.

The Gunners are in a tough spot with the January plans after Gabriel Jesus’s injury. The striker’s absence for the next three months could force Arsenal to sign a replacement striker to keep momentum in the title race. Mikel Arteta wants a new wide attacker to rotate with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, with Mykhaylo Mudryk their primary target.

With Arteta having worked briefly with Torres at Manchester City, he will know the player well and could try for a move. The versatile Barcelona forward has proved his worth with the Spanish international team but is somewhat unconvincing with his club form.

There’s also the interest from Tottenham, who are in the market for a new attacking signing. Despite signing Richarlison and teaming up the Brazilian with Son Heung-min and Harry Kane, Antonio Conte seeks a new dimension in the final third.

Lucas Moura is also coming to the end of his phase at Spurs, and Conte might want a replacement. Torres could replace the Brazilian on the side and become a crucial part of Conte’s plans for the future.

Barcelona is open on a sale and will likely get the best value for the Spanish international. Whether clubs are willing to pay close to their valuation remains the question, but the player undoubtedly will attract plenty of attention from top clubs.
