Chelsea are reportedly keeping tabs on 26-year-old Italian international Lorenzo Pellegrini amid Mason Mount’s contract standoff.

According to a report from Daily Telegraph, Lorenzo Pellegrini is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are eyeing the AS Roma midfielder as a potential replacement for Mason Mount, who could leave the club on a free transfer at the end of next season if talks over a new contract do not progress.

The 23-year-old Chelsea midfielder is nearing the end of his deal at Stamford Bridge. And the Blues have not been able to agree on a contract extension with him yet. The report claims that talks between the two parties have stalled. Recently, Manchester United were reported to be keeping tabs on his situation.

Mount has been an excellent servant for Chelsea since breaking onto the first-team scene. He has been their main source of creativity and goals from the midfield. So it will be a devastating blow for the Blues if they were to lose him in 2024.

Mount is yet to reach his peak and is likely to improve further. He could develop into a world-class player with experience and coaching. Meanwhile, Pellegrini has been excellent for Roma in recent seasons and could prove to be a quality acquisition for Chelsea. The 26-year-old Italian international will add creativity and goals from the midfield.

Pellegrini has four goals and seven assists to his name so far this season. He contributed to 22 goals last season (14 goals, 8 assists). So it is clear why Chelsea are interested in securing his services.

Pellegrini is a proven performer in Serie A, and it will be interesting to see if Chelsea can agree on a deal with Roma. The 26-year-old has a long-term contract with the Italian club until the summer of 2026.

He can play as a central midfielder as well as an attacking midfielder. His versatility will be an added bonus for Chelsea if they manage to sign him. In an ideal world, keeping Mount for the long run would be Chelsea’s priority. So it remains to be seen how that situation develops. Mount is a boyhood Chelsea fan, and it is fair to assume that he will extend his deal eventually.
