Manchester United have made an enquiry about the possibility of signing in-form Bayern Munich forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in January.
According to reputed German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United have expressed their intention to bring in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in the January transfer window.
Cristiano Ronaldo is destined to leave Old Trafford amid interest from Sporting CP. And the Manchester United hierarchy wants to have a contingency plan ready if the Portuguese superstar does not honour his contract.
Choupo-Moting’s late rise has been very surprising given the player’s advanced age, and the 33-year-old has been in ravishing form this season. Despite being handed a limited number of game times, the player has contributed pretty highly with ten goals and three assists in 14 matches in all competitions.
The Red Devils have been trying to figure out a fresh transfer strategy in this new reign and have somewhat been successful this summer. The likes of Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have exceeded expectations. So Manchester United might like to replicate that policy in January should there be funds available.
Manchester United’s interest in Marko Arnautovic and Adrien Rabiot did not leave a good impression on the fans. And Choupo-Moting’s potential arrival from Bayern Munich could attract a lot of ire from the supporters despite his superior form.
Bayern are aware of the interest and are ready to offer the player fresh terms to block any kind of move. Robert Lewandowski’s departure was expected to have severe implications, but the former Stoke City striker has been able to fill the gap to some extent.
Ronaldo’s struggles have been quite evident as the 37-year-old does not seem to be in a good shape. And with the World Cup looming thick and fast, Portugal might have a bigger problem than they might have expected.
Manchester United could ponder the option of terminating his contract if both parties can arrive at a mutual decision. Ronaldo’s intention of plying his trade for a Champions League club is still alive. And if a suitable offer comes Manchester United won’t block his path.
Choupo-Moting might be tempted by a return to the Premier League in the twilight of his career amid interest from Manchester United. But it remains to be seen whether the in-form Bayern Munich forward would be able to acclimatise to the English conditions again.
