Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is nearing the end of his contract at Stamford Bridge and is seeking top dollar before renewing with the Blues.
According to a report from SPORT, Jorginho is demanding wages of around €13.6 million per season to sign a contract extension with Chelsea. The Italian international is a target for Barcelona.
Currently, the difference between the two parties is too much in terms of his salary. And it remains to be seen whether they can come to a compromise. For now, Jorginho is demanding a double-your-pay deal from Chelsea to commit his future. That will take his wages up to €13.6 million per year.
The 30-year-old midfielder will be a free agent in the summer and will be able to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs as soon as the transfer window opens in January.
Jorginho has been a key player for Chelsea since joining the club from Napoli, and losing him on a free transfer would be a blow for the west Londoners. They must do everything in their power to tie him down to a long-term contract.
Despite the fact that he is 30, Jorginho is still a quality player who can contribute at the highest level for a few more seasons. Meanwhile, Barcelona are thought to be keen on signing the player. They are looking to sign him on a free transfer as a replacement for club legend Sergio Busquets. Jorginho certainly has the quality and the experience to reprise Busquets’s role at Camp Nou.
Previously, we have covered reports that the player’s representatives have spoken with the Spanish club. And Jorginho has assured them that he will wait for their official proposal before deciding his future.
The report from Sport adds that AC Milan are keen on signing the player as well. A return to Italy could be a tempting proposition for the Chelsea vice-captain. It remains to be seen whether Chelsea are prepared to shell out the big bucks to keep him at the club beyond this season.
Meanwhile, Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge as well, and his contract will expire in the summer. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea will agree to Jorginho’s demands and offer him a €13.6 million-a-year deal.
