Chelsea receive transfer boost in Benjamin Pavard pursuit

Chelsea might get an edge in their pursuit of Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard as the player seems to be ready to leave the Allianz Arena.

According to Express, Benjamin Pavard might have a change of heart as a lack of playing time could force him to alter his decision, and Chelsea could exploit the situation.

Chelsea had hoped to secure Pavard’s signature in the summer as Thomas Tuchel had loved the idea of employing him at Stamford Bridge. But co-owner Todd Boehly was interested in other players.

The Blues went on to splash more than £150 million to bolster their defence. But none of the signings have made an instant impact. Wesley Fofana has been on the sidelines, and he will have to wait till the conclusion of the World Cup to don the Chelsea jersey again.

Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella are yet to make their mark, and Graham Potter will be given a chance to strengthen his backline with adequate transfer kitty.

Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Marcos Alonso left the club in the summer, and the West Londoners have not been able to call up their replacements.

The 4-1 thrashing to Brighton & Hove Albion exposed the frailties in the Chelsea backline, and Potter needs to pencil in a defender as soon as possible. Pavard started his career as a right-back but has also been convincing in the centre of the defence.

The Bayern Munich defender has expressed his disgust a number of times, and the current situation might suggest the player won’t extend his stay beyond his current contract. His versatility makes him one of the most coveted players, and Chelsea will be adamant to pull the deal off next summer.

The 26-year-old will enter the last year of his contract next summer, and it might help Chelsea in their negotiations a bit. The chances of concluding a deal in January look slim, but he could be on his way out of Bayern Munich next summer. Chelsea have already shown their willingness to spend the right kind of money for the right player, and Pavard could be worth every penny if they choose to invest in him.
