Barcelona rival Real Madrid in Alphonso Davies pursuit

Barcelona will reportedly provide stiff competition to Real Madrid in the race to sign Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Alphonso Davies has popped up on Barcelona’s radar. The Catalan giants will compete with arch-rival Real Madrid to sign the Bayern Munich wide man in 2023.

Alphonso Davies has gone from strength to strength since joining Bayern Munich from Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019. But the Canadian wide man is no longer the speedy winger he was in Canada. He has instead remodelled himself as a left-back at the Allianz Arena, establishing himself as one of the best in his position in the Bundesliga.

Davies has turned out 128 times thus far for Bayern Munich, chipping in with five goals and 21 assists. The 21-year-old will also feature at the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Canada, a momentous occasion in his career. Meanwhile, his exploits have captured the attention of the two biggest clubs in Spain, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Real Madrid first showed interest in Davies a few years ago. And they have continued to monitor his progress at Bayern Munich. The interest in the Bayern Munich wide man is intriguing, considering David Alaba and Ferland Mendy usually feature as the left-backs for Los Blancos.

But with Alaba preferring to start as a centre-back and Mendy blowing hot and cold, signing Davies might be the right idea for Real Madrid. But the Merengues need to stave off stiff competition from arch-rival Barcelona to secure the youngster’s services.

Like Real Madrid, Barcelona might look to sign a left-back next summer. The Catalan giants have thus shown interest in several players, including Alex Moreno. But Davies is a more established name and will provide more years to Barcelona. And with Jordi Alba likely to leave next year, the Bayern Munich wide man is a viable option.

But while Davies is an attractive target for Barcelona and Real Madrid, Bayern Munich will unlikely sanction his sale. So unless the Canadian international pushes for a move to Spain, a departure from the Allianz Arena is not expected. But it will be interesting to see if Barcelona or Real Madrid can land the 21-year-old.
