Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to part ways with Steven Bergwijn, who is set for a move to Ajax.
According to De Telegraaf, Ajax are closing in on the capture of Steven Bergwijn. The Dutch giants have reached an agreement worth €30 million with Tottenham Hotspur, over the signing of the explosive winger. The out-of-favour forward has already agreed personal terms with Ajax, and it could only be a matter of time before the deal is finalised.
Bergwijn’s potential move to Ajax could put an end to his spell at Spurs that can be described as miserable, at best. The winger had initially joined the club in early 2020, in a deal worth €30 million. After scoring in his debut, many felt the attacker was set for greatness at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
After two and a half years in England, Bergwijn has struggled to make his presence felt at Tottenham, often failing to provide enough consistency to the table. In 83 competitive matches, the 24-year-old forward has scored only eight goals, while racking up ten assists.
This past season saw the Dutchman feature in just over 500 minutes of league football. Bergwijn’s role in the Tottenham side was set to dwindle further with the acquisition of Richarlison from Everton, thus compelling him to seek an exit away from north London.
Curiously, Everton were interested in securing the services of Bergwijn, as a direct replacement for Richarlison. But it appears Ajax have prevailed in the pursuit, as the 24-year-old is presumably keen on returning to the Eredivisie rather than trying his luck once again in the physically astute nature of the Premier League.
Bergwijn’s move to Ajax could potentially create a domino effect, though, which may ultimately bode well for Manchester United. Indeed, the former PSV Eindhoven superstar can be viewed as a direct replacement for Antony, who has been closely linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer.
Although Manchester United have been slapped with a hefty price tag for Antony this summer, Ajax could be forced to hold out for a lower figure if they end up signing a replacement.
As for Tottenham, they will be extremely happy to have recouped the €30 million they had spent on the out-of-favour Dutchman two years ago. The Lilywhites will be hoping to put the money to good use and preferably sign a new defender who can accompany Eric Dier and Cristiano Romero next season.
