Liverpool are reportedly considering a shock swoop for Chelsea and Germany forward Timo Werner, possibly as a replacement for Sadio Mane.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool are plotting a surprise raid on arch-rivals Chelsea this summer for the signing of Timo Werner. The Reds are on the lookout for a replacement for Sadio Mane and have seemingly identified the German international as an option.
Werner signed for Chelsea in the summer of 2020, arriving from German giants RB Leipzig. The 26-year-old had been linked with a move to Liverpool back then as well, but he opted to snub the Reds in favour of a move to Stamford Bridge. However, the forward has endured a torrid time in west London, failing to show the form and quality that made Chelsea splash the big bucks on him.
Indeed, Werner has managed a return of just 23 goals in 89 appearances for Chelsea so far in his two seasons with the club. Of those 23, only ten have come in the Premier League despite the attacker playing 56 times in the competition. It has led to serious question marks over his future at Stamford Bridge, especially with Thomas Tuchel plotting an overhaul of his attacking unit.
Chelsea already are set to part ways with Romelu Lukaku, who is on the verge of sealing a return to Inter Milan. And Werner, too, could follow the Belgian through the exit doors, with Liverpool presenting themselves as a possible destination for the 26-year-old German international.
Liverpool are staring at a complete revamp of their frontline this summer. Sadio Mane has departed Anfield and joined Bayern Munich, while both Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are entering the final year of their respective contracts with no extension in sight. Furthermore, Divock Origi has also left the Reds for AC Milan, while Takumi Minamino is on the verge of joining AS Monaco.
It has prompted Jurgen Klopp to look for options in the market to bolster his frontline. Luis Diaz arrived in January from FC Porto before Liverpool signed Fabio Carvalho from Fulham and Darwin Nunez from SL Benfica earlier this summer. However, in light of Mane’s departure and continued speculation about Salah’s situation, another attacking signing cannot be ruled out at this point.
A move for Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio has been touted, while Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic was also said to be on the Merseysiders’ radars. However, recent reports indicate that the USMNT star is not under consideration at Anfield as things stand. But Football Insider is now suggesting that Pulisic’s teammate, Werner, could be a target for Klopp and Liverpool.

The report states that Klopp and his staff believe that Werner can succeed at Liverpool despite his struggles at Chelsea as he would be more suited to their high-tempo style of play. However, it adds that the interest is at a very initial stage and no talks have taken place between any parties. It will be intriguing to see how this transfer story evolves in the coming days as Liverpool continue to splurge in the market.
