Barcelona rekindle Edinson Cavani pursuit

Barcelona could reportedly pursue Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani if they fail to sign Robert Lewandowski in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Edinson Cavani is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The veteran Uruguayan forward will officially become a free agent when he leaves Manchester United in less than a week.

Edinson Cavani is on the verge of officially ending his two-year stint with Manchester United when he departs from Old Trafford as a free agent on July 1. The 35-year-old endured a mixed bag of a spell with Manchester United, as he was a pivotal figure in his debut campaign before becoming a bit-part player due to fitness issues and Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence in the squad.

The Uruguayan international managed just 912 minutes of game-time this past season, scoring two goals in 20 appearances across all competitions. Cavani’s topsy turvy time at Manchester United has now ended, and his next adventure remains unclear. But Barcelona could offer him a way to play at the highest level in the 2022/23 campaign.

Robert Lewandowski is Barcelona’s priority target for the summer transfer window, with the Pole rising to the top of the Catalan club’s wishlist after it became clear that Erling Haaland was too expensive. Haaland has since joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund, while Lewandowski is pushing to move to Barcelona.

The veteran striker has been vocal in his desire to leave Bayern Munich, but the Bundesliga champions are hell-bent on keeping hold of their star forward. Barcelona will thus need to keep a contingency plan in place if Lewandowski does not arrive from Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window.

Hence, Cavani has popped up on Barcelona’s radar again over a possible Bosman move. The Manchester United forward is an appealing target for Barcelona due to his impending status as a free agent. And with the identity of his next club nowhere near being identified, the Blaugrana might have a decent chance of landing him.

Cavani is also a target for clubs in Mexico, Italy and South America. But the prospect of joining Barcelona might turn the Uruguayan international’s head as he looks to play regularly after leaving Manchester United to make his country’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
