Real Madrid will reportedly likely look to sign Christopher Nkunku from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig in the 2023 summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Christopher Nkunku will likely remain at RB Leipzig beyond the summer transfer window. But Real Madrid could return to launch the offensive for the 24-year-old attacker next year if he continues his development at the Bundesliga club.
Christopher Nkunku has transformed into an all-round, dominating forward since joining RB Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain in July 2019. The French international was a talented midfielder when he moved to the Red Bull Arena but has become one of the best attackers in the Bundesliga in the last three years.
The 24-year-old enjoyed an excellent 2021/22 campaign where he amassed 35 goals and 20 assists in 51 appearances across all competitions. And Nkunku’s exploits have captured the attention of some of the most high-profile clubs in Europe, with Real Madrid among his prospective suitors.
Real Madrid considered signing Nkunku in the upcoming summer transfer window after failing to secure the services of Kylian Mbappe in a Bosman move from Paris Saint-Germain. But Nkunku’s price tag is too excessive in a window where Aurelien Tchouameni has already joined Real Madrid in a big-money transfer.
Nonetheless, Nkunku was a viable target for Real Madrid amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Marco Asensio. But the Spanish giants are unlikely to launch the offensive to sign the 24-year-old in the summer transfer window this year, with Leipzig demanding €100 million for his signature.
Real Madrid will instead put off the move to sign Nkunku until 2023. That will give the Merengues enough time to closely monitor the French international’s progress in the Bundesliga before deciding whether the offensive unit will need reinforcing ahead of the 2023/24 season.
But Real Madrid will have to be wary about competition from other European bigwigs for Nkunku’s signature. The 24-year-old is also a target for Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United, apart from other clubs in Europe. And with Nkunku’s stock constantly rising, it will not be surprising to see an all-out transfer war for his signature if Bundesliga giants Leipzig can keep him for another season.
