Marco Asensio prepared to leave Real Madrid as a free agent

Marco Asensio is reportedly ready to leave Real Madrid as a free agent when his contract runs out in the 2023 summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Marco Asensio will have no qualms about leaving Real Madrid as a free agent. The Spanish international will see his contract expire on June 30, 2023, with Los Blancos attempting to tie him down to a new long-term deal.

Marco Asensio is at a crossroads in his career, as he made some pivotal contributions to Real Madrid in the 2021/22 season but had to constantly fight for his spot in the side. Rodrygo Goes had usurped the 26-year-old by the end of the season, and he became a rotation option for Carlo Ancelotti.

So while the Spanish international amassed 12 goals and two assists in 42 appearances across all competitions, he will have been dismayed by his status in Ancelotti’s squad. And Asensio’s contract situation will have left Real Madrid in a spot of bother, as his deal will run out in next summer’s transfer window.

The Spanish giants want to tie Asensio down to a new contract, as Ancelotti considers the Spaniard a crucial part of his squad. Recent reports have also claimed that Real Madrid had tabled a new contract offer to Asensio, who seemed open to staying put at the Santiago Bernabeu despite his status in the team.

Meanwhile, Asensio’s contract situation at Real Madrid has captured the attention of several high profile clubs across Europe, including Manchester United. The player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is also attempting to offer him to several clubs, leaving Real Madrid in a difficult position.

Asensio recently opened up about his future, asserting that he would soon resume discussions with Real Madrid to seek clarity on his situation. But according to Defensa Central, the 26-year-old is open to leaving Real Madrid as a free agent in the summer transfer window of 2023.

Such a development might force Real Madrid’s hand, prompting them to put Asensio on the market this summer. If not, the Spanish international can leave Real Madrid as a free agent next year unless the two parties can reach an agreement over a new contract.
