Speaking to journalists in the mixed zone after Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League triumph, as quoted by ESPN, Marcelo has confirmed the inevitable. The Real Madrid captain has revealed that he will depart from the Santiago Bernabeu as a free agent in the summer transfer window.
Marcelo joined Real Madrid from boyhood club Fluminense in January 2007 as a promising young full-back. The Brazilian international succeeded compatriot and Real Madrid icon Roberto Carlos at the Santiago Bernabeu and has arguably scripted a greater legacy at the Spanish club.
After spending over a decade and a half at Real Madrid, the 34-year-old made 545 appearances for Real Madrid, amassing 38 goals and 103 assists. And Marcelo will go down in history as Real Madrid’s most successful player, winning 25 trophies in the last fifteen and a half years with Los Blancos.
But despite the highs of multiple title celebrations this season, Marcelo’s future at Real Madrid is non-existent, with his contract expiring next month. And the veteran Brazilian defender has confirmed that he will become the latest Real Madrid captain to depart from the Santiago Bernabeu as a free agent.

Marcelo confirmed the inevitable while peaking to journalists in the mixed zone after Real Madrid’s win over Liverpool to clinch the UEFA Champions League title, Marcelo confirmed the inevitable. The experienced full-back said he will leave Real Madrid but that it is not a sad occasion for him as his stint has ended in a successful manner.
The Real Madrid captain said, “It’s an incredible emotion because it’s my last game at Real Madrid. Leaving with a Champions League is a huge joy. It isn’t a sad day. You talk about things. We’ve spoken and we’ve decided it’s best like that. I’ve already done everything I had to do at Madrid. I’ve been lucky to be here for 15 and a half years at the best club in the world.”
The decision comes after Real Madrid briefly considered handing Marcelo a contract extension. But as the days progressed, it became clear that the Merengues were not planning to offer the 34-year-old a renewal, even though he was keen on staying. Marcelo will likely return to Brazil, with Fluminense among the clubs looking to land him.
