Tottenham register interest in Filip Kostic

Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur are exploring the possibility of signing Eintracht Frankfurt wing-back, Filip Kostic.

According to The Independent journalist Miguel Delaney (h/t The Boot Room), Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on Eintracht Frankfurt’s Filip Kostic and could make a summer move for him. The 29-year-old has been in eye-catching form for the Bundesliga side this season. He is thus attracting interest from all around Europe.

The Independent report claims Tottenham are exploring the possibility of signing the Serbian international, who can play as a left wing-back and further up on the flank too. He has registered seven goals and 14 assists for Frankfurt across competitions this season, putting him on Tottenham’s radar.

The north London club are preparing for a big summer and are willing to provide manager Antonio Conte with funds for a squad overhaul. Wing-back is an area that the Italian tactician is willing to add reinforcements in and Kostic has thus emerged as a potential summer target.

The 29-year-old first joined Frankfurt on a year-long loan from Hamburg in 2018 before the move was made permanent a year later. He has since been a mainstay in the squad and has made over 30 league appearances in each of his three full seasons with the club.

Kostic has been consistently contributing with goals and assists. His first season with Frankfurt saw him score six and assist 11 goals in Bundesliga. He followed it up with another fruitful season, contributing four goals and 12 assists in the 2019/20 term. The next season was even better for the Serbia international where he registered 17 assists on top of four goals.

He has continued performing in a similar vein this season, which has put Tottenham on alert. Conte believes Kostic can be an upgrade on the current wing-back options he has on the left flank in Ryan Sessegnon and Sergio Reguilon. The latter has been linked with an exit in the summer, with Barcelona among the clubs interested. So, there could be room for a new left wing-back, making Kostic a viable target.

The Frankfurt star can also play further up the pitch and is the type of attacking wing-back that would suit Conte’s system. His ability to venture forward at will and contribute heavily to the team’s attacks would make him an exciting addition to the north London club.

Kostic will have just a year remaining on his contract after the current season, which would make it easier for Tottenham to convince Frankfurt if they seriously consider signing the Serbian.
