Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Matthias Ginter and have held talks with his representatives over a free transfer.
According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Aston Villa have held talks with Matthias Ginter’s representatives over a summer transfer. While Steven Gerrard seems interested in the defender, the German international is yet to make a concrete decision regarding his future.
Matthias Ginter’s potential availability on a free transfer in the summer has caught the attention of multiple sides across the continent. The 28-year-old is one of the finest centre-backs coming out of Germany in the last decade, and teams are expected to scramble for his signature after the season ends.
The Borussia Monchengladbach man is in no rush to decide as he awaits potential offers from suitors. While finances will likely be an important factor in deciding his future, Ginter may also look at the quality of the team before putting pen to paper.
There were rumours of interest from Tottenham in the winter window, but the defender remained with the Bundesliga club. Reports also claim that Real Madrid rejected the chance to sign the German in January. It is unclear whether they will come back, but one team has already started making their move to bring the defender to the Premier League.
Aston Villa are exploring the idea of signing Ginter in a Bosman move, although it could prove difficult. Steven Gerrard is expected to shore up his backline after some terrible performances. Their latest game against Tottenham ended in a 0-4 drubbing at home. The former Rangers boss is reportedly not convinced with most of his central defensive options and is seeking massive upgrades.
Aston Villa have held talks with Ginter’s representatives over a move in the summer. But the defender has not made a concrete decision yet. The Midlands club are also looking at other options as they are reportedly scouting Stefan de Vrij of Inter Milan. In a similar situation to Ginter, the Dutchman too could wait for other offers. Gerrard may find it challenging to bring the quality centre-back he desires.
Aston Villa are also interested in Fenerbahce’s Attila Szalai, and there could be more names popping up on their radar as the summer window approaches. As for Ginter, the Midlands side may find it tough convincing the defender to join them.
As things stand, Ginter has plenty of time to wait for offers ahead of the summer. He will look for a club where he can find success, and it could be anywhere in the Premier League, La Liga or Bundesliga. However, it is difficult to see the German joining Aston Villa unless there is a terrific offer on the table.
