Liverpool backed to make a move for Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher

Tony Cascarino has hoped Liverpool get the ‘outstanding’ Conor Gallagher, although he conceded Chelsea may never sell him to the Reds.

After an impressive season on loan for a disappointing West Bromwich Albion side in 2020/21, there were many clubs chasing the loan signing of Conor Gallagher during the last summer window. Crystal Palace won the race, and under Patrick Vieira, the Chelsea loanee has become one of the best players in his age group. His performances have led to an England call-up and a subsequent debut for the Three Lions.

The midfielder continues to rise in stature, although his future remains uncertain. Chelsea are considering integrating the academy graduate into their team next season. Alternatively, they might brace themselves for offers from clubs across the continent. Everton are credited with an interest, although he might as well have another season with Palace if the Toffees are the next best option.

Italian outfit AS Roma are vying for his signature and face competition from domestic rivals Inter Milan and Juventus. It is safe to say there is considerable interest in the midfielder, who may have to make a challenging decision in the summer.

Former Republic of Ireland and Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino told talkSPORT (h/t Metro) that Liverpool should be looking to sign him, as the ‘outstanding’ Gallagher could improve the Reds in the long term. He also added that such a move could be difficult considering Chelsea may never sell a quality player to a direct rival like Liverpool.

Cascarino said, “Conor Gallagher is an outstanding attacking midfielder who always looks like he’s going to get a goal or make an assist. I like him because I don’t think there’s too many of his type around. Liverpool, for me, if they had a player like that as well adding him behind their front three, with his ability to get goals. Chelsea would never sell him to Liverpool, but they’d do really well with him.”

Cascarino might be right with that, as the Blues may not look to strengthen one of their arch-rivals by allowing a top-rated player to join them. However, he suggests that Chelsea should provide Gallagher with the right opportunities next term and provide the player with the platform to shine at Stamford Bridge.

He continued, “Conor Gallagher will get goals. Whether or not he will get his chance at Chelsea, I don’t know. No one at Chelsea can do what he does, but it depends if Thomas Tuchel wants to play that kind of player in his system. I hope he does give him a chance.”

Chelsea could count on Gallagher to become an integral part of Thomas Tuchel’s side next season. The midfielder has performed in some big matches and could fit in well at Stamford Bridge. Considering the many problems at Chelsea, wherein they cannot buy or sell players, Gallagher could be regarded as someone ‘like a new signing’ if their embargo does not gets lifted.
