Real Madrid talisman Karim Benzema has reportedly emerged as a target for former club Lyon over a possible move in the 2023 summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Karim Benzema is the subject of interest from former club Lyon. The Ligue 1 giants are hoping to sign the Real Madrid talisman in the 2023 summer transfer window and have offered him a contract to complete a Bosman move next year.
Karim Benzema is one of the greatest players of his generation, having been a pivotal figure for Real Madrid since arriving from Lyon in July 2009. There were a few seasons when he did not chip in with goals consistently, but he has come into his own since Cristiano Ronaldo departed from the Santiago Bernabeu nearly four years ago.
The 2021/22 campaign has been arguably his best for Real Madrid, with the 34-year-old amassing 32 goals and 13 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. In doing so, Benzema has attained the status of being the Real Madrid talisman, sometimes singlehandedly delivering wins to Los Blancos.
But with the French international well into his thirties and approaching the final phase of his career, Real Madrid will need to lay down a succession plan for him. At the same time, Benzema’s contract situation is dicey as he has a little over a year left on his current deal. Such a situation has captured the attention of former club Lyon.
Les Gones could do with a prolific striker to regain their lost status in Ligue 1 and become regular contenders to clinch a UEFA Champions League berth again. To that end, they are plotting a move for former prodigy Benzema, albeit over a Bosman move in the 2023 summer transfer window.
Benzema already has a contract on his table from Lyon, with the French heavyweights keen on prising him away from Real Madrid on a free transfer next year. But widespread reports have claimed that Real Madrid could soon hand Benzema a new contract.
As for the interest from Lyon, even though Benzema will be 35 years old by 2023, he has shown that he is in the form of his life and could be trusted to spearhead Les Gones’ attack for a few years, essentially filling the gaping hole left by the departure of Memphis Depay last summer. But with Real Madrid considering offering him a contract renewal, it is unclear if a move will be possible.
