Liverpool battle Barcelona, Real Madrid for Robert Lewandowski

Liverpool will reportedly wage a transfer battle with Barcelona and Real Madrid for Robert Lewandowski after offering him a €20 million-a-year deal.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Robert Lewandowski is the subject of interest from Liverpool over a possible €70 million move in the summer transfer window. The Reds have offered a €20 million-a-year contract to the Polish striker, a target for Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Robert Lewandowski has been the most dominant striker in Europe since moving to Germany by joining Borussia Dortmund over a decade ago. And he has transformed into a goal machine following his move to Bayern Munich in July 2014, establishing himself as arguably the best striker of his generation.

The 33-year-old has been breaking records for fun lately and has a stunning tally of 45 goals and four assists in 37 appearances across all competitions this term. But the Bundesliga champions are in a spot of bother over Lewandowski’s long-term future, as he has a little over a year left on his contract. Such a situation has captured the attention of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool.

The interest from Barcelona comes in the wake of the rampant uncertainties surrounding the future of Martin Braithwaite. The Dane will likely depart Camp Nou in the summer. In addition, Luuk de Jong will return to Sevilla for good once his loan deal expires. That will leave Xavi Hernandez with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the only striker at his disposal, thereby explaining the interest in the Pole.

Meanwhile, the links with Real Madrid are surprising, considering Karim Benzema is in the form of his life. With Lewandowski nearly as old as the Real Madrid talisman, it is hard to see how the 33-year-old will fit in the scheme of things at the Santiago Bernabeu. And now, Real Madrid and Barcelona will have to fend off interest from Liverpool.

According to Fichajes, the Reds have offered Bayern Munich around €70 million for Lewandowski while tabling a contract worth €20 million per year to the player. While the Liverpool attack has been in superb touch this season, the addition of a natural striker like Lewandowski could add another dimension to their offensive unit.

As things stand, Lewandowski is at odds with Bayern Munich over the terms of a new contract. And if his standoff continues, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Liverpool might fancy their chances of snapping up the Pole, with the Reds making the first move by offering a €20 million-a-year deal.
