Manchester United are reportedly lining up a move for Dundee United’s Swiss goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist in the summer transfer window.
According to The Sun, Manchester United are considering making a swoop for Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist in the summer as a backup for David de Gea.
Siegrist began his footballing journey in his homeland, Switzerland and spent time at the FC Basel academy before moving to Aston Villa in January 2009. The shot-stopper had loan stints away at Burton Albion, Cambridge United, Solihull Moors and Wycombe Wanderers before returning to Switzerland in 2016 when he signed for FC Vaduz.
Having spent two years at the club, Siegrist moved to Scotland, signing for Dundee United in 2018 and has been a mainstay between the sticks for the club ever since. The 30-year-old has made 138 appearances for the Scottish outfit, keeping 51 clean sheets in the process.
While he might not be the biggest name around, Siegrist has seemingly caught the eye of Manchester United, who could be forced into the market for a new goalkeeper this summer. David de Gea is seemingly back to his best this season, which has meant that Dean Henderson has found game-time hard to come by.
The Englishman is unhappy with his situation at Old Trafford and will seek an exit from the club in the summer, with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur interested. In case of the academy graduate’s departure, Manchester United will need a quality backup for de Gea even though they have veteran stopper Tom Heaton as their third-choice.
A move for another former academy man, Sam Johnstone, has been mooted. The England international will become a free agent in the summer as his contract with West Bromwich Albion stands to expire. And Manchester United are interested in taking him back to Old Trafford in a Bosman move.
But, if they miss out on the Baggies ace, the Red Devils are keeping their options open, with Siegrist emerging as a target. The 30-year-old was recently scouted by Manchester United’s goalkeeping coach Tony Coton, who knows the player from his days at Aston Villa.
Like Johnstone, Siegrist will also be a free agent in the summer as his contract with Dundee United will run out. And Manchester United could decide to swoop in for the Swiss shot-stopper by offering him a contract. Although, it must be noted that any move would hinge on the exit of Dean Henderson. Should United convince him to stay put, it is unlikely that they will try to sign another goalkeeper.
