Villarreal want to add Manchester United star Edinson Cavani to their ranks as they eye a financially viable option to shore up their frontline for next term.
According to Fichajes, Edinson Cavani is a summer target for Villarreal, as the Spanish giants eye an affordable option to strengthen their forward line for next season. When his contract expires, the Manchester United forward will be available on a free transfer in the summer.
Villarreal have been progressing well under Unai Emery over the past 20 months or so. The Spanish manager led the side to a successful Europa League campaign last season, beating Manchester United on penalties in the final, which resulted in their participation in this season’s Champions League.
And Emery has kept them competitive this season, as they pulled off a huge upset over Juventus earlier this week, sending the Bianconeri packing from the competition. Despite their entry into the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Villarreal may not have what it takes to go the distance.
However, they can still manage to earn significantly from their run in the competition, which in turn could fuel their transfer plans next summer.
Villarreal are chalking out plans for the summer window as they look to shore up key areas of the squad, including midfield and forward positions. They could convert Giovani Lo Celso’s loan move into a permanent one, among other potential activities. Emery is reportedly keen on bringing in a new striker to give them more options up front, beyond Gerard Moreno and Arnaut Danjuma.
One of their preferred targets is Edinson Cavani, who could become a financially viable option in the summer. The Uruguayan is likely to leave Manchester United when his contract expires in June, as there are no indications from the club over extending his stay.
Cavani has reportedly signalled his intention to play in La Liga, and this could open up the doors for a move to Villarreal in the summer on a free transfer. The Uruguayan could be an economically feasible target for the Yellow Submarine, while also adding value with his experience.
Cavani has struggled with injuries this season, leading to questions about whether he can be relied upon throughout a season. The forward has managed only 17 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions following niggling injuries and fitness concerns. However, when on the pitch, the striker has maintained a high quality, which Emery could use at Villarreal.
There could be other clubs in the mix during the summer window, which could complicate Villarreal’s quest for the Manchester United striker. It remains to be seen if Emery’s side can lure Cavani and add to their existing forward line.
