Real Madrid battle PSG for Jonathan Clauss

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain will reportedly lock horns in the race to sign Jonathan Clauss from Ligue 1 outfit Lens in the summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing 29-year-old right-back Jonathan Clauss from Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens in the summer transfer window.

Jonathan Clauss has established himself as one of the best full-backs in Europe since joining RC Lens from Arminia Bielefeld in July 2020. Over the last two years, the French defender has been a mainstay at the back for the Ligue 1 club and has taken his game to new heights in the ongoing campaign.

The 29-year-old has been one of the most productive full-backs in the top five European leagues, amassing four goals and nine assists in 26 Ligue 1 appearances. Clauss’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with some of the biggest clubs in the continent, including Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, setting their sights on him.

Real Madrid might delve into the market for a right-back in the summer transfer window, as Dani Carvajal has experienced a significant dip in performance levels in the past year or so. The Spanish international has also suffered a few injuries during this period, prompting Real Madrid to consider their options. Recent reports have even claimed that Bayern Munich could make a move for the veteran defender.

Real Madrid will thus need to invest in a right-back in the summer unless Alvaro Odriozola is re-integrated into the first-team squad. Several players, including Jeremie Frimpong, have been linked with Los Blancos, with Clauss also emerging as a viable target. On the other hand, the interest from PSG comes as a bit of a surprise.

The Ligue 1 heavyweights have one of the best full-backs in the game in Achraf Hakimi. With Colin Dagba being an able backup, the need to sign a right-back is not apparent. Nonetheless, it looks like Clauss features prominently in Leonardo’s plans for the future.

RC Lens will stand to make a profit whenever they sell Clauss, considering they signed the 29-year-old on a free transfer two years ago. With Real Madrid and PSG hot on his trail, the Ligue 1 outfit could end up making a lot of money if he departs in the summer.
