Wayne Rooney claims Manchester United have been in decline for a decade

Wayne Rooney has made a big claim about Manchester United and their recent struggles, suggesting they have been on a decline since 2011.

Wayne Rooney has had his say on Manchester United’s struggles in the last few years. As reported by the Daily Mirror, the Red Devils’ all-time top scorer suggested that the record 20-time English champions have been on a decline since 2011.

One might not be wide of the mark in saying that Manchester United are a shell of the team they once were under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson. The Red Devils once dominated English football for years on end but have faltered considerably since the retirement of their great former manager.

Manchester United’s owners, the Glazer family, have come under intense scrutiny from fans and pundits alike. Many have pointed towards their failure to properly back manager after manager as the major reason for Manchester United’s struggles in recent years. And now, Wayne Rooney has had his say on the club’s decline.

As reported by the Daily Mirror, the Manchester United all-time top scorer has suggested that the club’s decline began over a decade ago. Rooney also added that it was a miracle for the club to win the 2012/13 Premier League title.

“You could see after 2011; Ronaldo left in 2009, Tevez left and after that you could see it was going to go backwards before it can move forwards,” Rooney is quoted as saying. “You could see after 2011; Ronaldo left in 2009, Tevez left and after that you could see it was going to go backwards before it can move forwards. It wasn’t a great team in 2013. For us to win that Premier League title was a miracle, really, I think.”

“A massive part of it was [Robin] van Persie. I think him coming in gave everyone a lift, coming in at number nine, scoring the goals he scored. That was a bit of a masterstroke from the manager, to bring him in and have him hungry because he was a bit older as well. He really carried us that season.”

Wayne Rooney’s words hold a lot of weight, and he is correct in saying that Manchester United’s struggles stem from decisions taken over a decade ago. The latest demonstration of the Red Devils’ struggles came in their shock ouster from the FA Cup against Middlesbrough last week. How long the club takes before scaling English football’s summit once again remains a mystery.
