La Liga giants Barcelona and Sevilla are reportedly weighing up the prospect of signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Arsenal this month.
According to a report by the Daily Telegraph, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang might be approaching the end of the road at Arsenal but has no shortage of suitors vying for his signature. La Liga giants Barcelona and Sevilla will battle several other European bigwigs in pursuit of the Gabonese forward.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has gone from the most pivotal figure at Arsenal to a forgotten player at the Emirates. Once the club captain, the 32-year-old ran into trouble a bit too many times due to disciplinary breaches, prompting Mikel Arteta to strip him of the captaincy and banish him from the first-team picture.
The beleaguered Gabonese forward’s form had evaded him, too, as he has managed a tally of only four goals and one assist in 14 Premier League appearances this season. But despite being out of favour at Arsenal, Aubameyang has plenty of clubs battling to secure his services, with two of his prospective suitors being Barcelona and Sevilla.
The interest from Barcelona comes in the wake of Sergio Aguero’s premature retirement, with the Argentine legend forced to call time on his career due to a heart ailment. With Aguero no longer on their books, the Catalan giants need to enter the market for a striker despite Luuk de Jong’s recent resurgent run.
On the other hand, Sevilla’s urgency to sign a centre-forward has resulted from Youssef En-Nesyri’s absence this month due to his participation at the Africa Cup of Nations. But it seems unlikely that the La Liga title hopefuls will sign Aubameyang following the arrival of Anthony Martial on loan from Manchester United after reaching an agreement to sign him this week.
Apart from Barcelona and Sevilla, the beleaguered Arsenal forward has several other high profile clubs in Europe vying for his signature. Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and AC Milan have recently submitted their respective enquiries to Arsenal for the 32-year-old and will battle the two La Liga giants in the race to sign him.
One thing that appears to be certain for now is that Aubameyang will not be departing Europe, rejecting the chance to sign for Al Hilal or Al Nassr after the two clubs made offers to sign him. But with time running out in the January transfer window, the rest of his suitors will need to step up their efforts to sign the Gabonese international.
