Barcelona are reportedly closely monitoring the progress of 21-year-old Athletic Bilbao attacker Oihan Sancet.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Oihan Sancet is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants are tracking the 22-year-old Athletic Bilbao attacker’s progress, with Xavi Hernandez impressed by his performances this season.
Oihan Sancet is widely regarded as one of the most promising young attacking players in La Liga, having made excellent progress since joining Athletic Bilbao from Osasuna in 2015. The youngster made his first-team bow for Los Leones in August 2019, aged just 19, and he has since made massive strides at San Mames.
The 2021/22 season has been his best to date, with Sancet amassing four goals and three assists in 20 appearances across all competitions thus far. The 21-year-old’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with one of the biggest clubs in La Liga, Barcelona, setting sights on him over a possible summer move.
The interest from Barcelona stems from the uncertainties surrounding the futures of Luuk de Jong and Martin Braithwaite at Camp Nou. The strikers are likely to be offloaded in the summer transfer window, even though de Jong has recently shown some resurgent signs, and Braithwaite has often been a handy backup option.
Memphis Depay’s Barcelona future is not set in stone either, with the Dutch international linked with a gamut of clubs across Europe. Barcelona will thus need to make many attacking investments in the summer transfer window, with Erling Haaland reportedly being their key target.
To that end, Sancet has emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, with his versatility potentially making him an option to feature across the attacking line. The 21-year-old’s acquisition will also enable Joan Laporta to continue adding more Spanish elements to the first-team squad at Camp Nou.
But Barcelona will need to move quickly to secure the services of the Athletic Bilbao attacker, with La Liga rivals Real Madrid also keeping tabs on his progress. For now, the Catalan giants are also closely monitoring the 21-year-old’s development, and it will be interesting to see if they firm up their interest in him in the summer.
