Barcelona are reportedly weighing up the prospect of re-signing 28-year-old defender Lucas Digne from Premier League giants Everton in January.
According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Lucas Digne has emerged on the radar of former club Barcelona over a possible move in the January transfer window. The Catalan giants are considering re-signing the 28-year-old from Premier League giants Everton.
Lucas Digne joined Everton from Barcelona in August 2018, looking to secure regular game-time. And the French defender did not just become the Toffees’ first-choice left-back but also established himself as one of the best full-backs in the Premier League in his maiden campaign.
To date, the 28-year-old has made 127 appearances for Everton, chipping in with six goals and 20 assists in the process. However, Digne’s stint with the Premier League club will likely end in the January transfer window due to a rift with manager Rafael Benitez. Such a situation has piqued the interest of several clubs, including Barcelona.
The Catalan giants are reportedly in the market for a left-back, and for a good reason. Jordi Alba has endured a significant dip in performance levels in the last few years. Recent reports have also claimed that the Spanish international could be sold as part of Barcelona’s impending squad overhaul next summer.
Alba has recently been linked with Paris Saint-Germain, and his departure would prompt Barcelona to bring in a long-term replacement, especially with Alejandro Balde making slow progress since being promoted to the first team. To that end, several left-backs have been linked with Barcelona.
In particular, Jose Gaya is Barcelona’s priority target, with the Spanish international also reportedly keen on joining the Blaugrana. However, Gaya will only be pursued in the summer transfer window, meaning Digne is a viable target if the Catalan giants decide to sign a left-back in January.
However, Barcelona will need to fend off competition from several big clubs in Europe, with recent reports even claiming that Digne is keen on joining Chelsea. For now, the 28-year-old has emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, especially with his spell with Premier League giants ready to part with him.
