Real Madrid are reportedly pondering the prospect of signing 25-year-old Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan in January.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Denzel Dumfries remains on the agenda for Real Madrid heading into the January transfer window. The Spanish giants are exploring the prospect of signing the 25-year-old right-back from Serie A champions Inter Milan.
Denzel Dumfries joined Inter Milan from PSV Eindhoven in August 2021 and has established himself as one of the best wing-backs in Serie A. While the Dutch international experienced teething problems initially, he has overcome his struggles superbly in recent weeks to become a key figure for the Nerazzurri.
The 25-year-old has made 20 appearances across all competitions this season, chipping in with two goals and three assists in the process. Dumfries’s performances have helped the Serie A champions get over the loss of Achraf Hakimi in the summer, and he has gone from strength to strength. The player’s exploits have now been noticed by Real Madrid.
Interestingly, Real Madrid had been keen on signing Dumfries in the summer transfer window only for the Dutchman to join Inter Milan. The interest has not waned since then, though, with Los Blancos continuing to monitor his progress at San Siro.
The eagerness to sign Dumfries does make sense, considering Dani Carvajal is the only natural right-back at Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal. While Lucas Vazquez was impressive as a makeshift right-back last season, the Spaniard has failed to deliver the goods from the position this term and has largely been used in an advanced role by Carlo Ancelotti.
The only other makeshift option at Ancelotti’s disposal is Nacho. In addition, Alvaro Odriozola is enjoying a solid loan spell with Serie A club Fiorentina. So, Real Madrid will need to enter the transfer market for a right-back if Ancelotti deems Carvajal not enough to last an entire season, keeping his recent fitness issues in mind.
Carvajal has also been bizarrely tipped to be a possible candidate on the transfer list for Real Madrid, meaning it behoves the Merengues to search for a right-back. To that end, several right-backs have been linked with Real Madrid, including Jeremie Frimpong, with Dumfries also a viable target.
However, Inter Milan might not be open to letting Dumfries join another club in the middle of the season, with the Serie A title challenge still alive. And with the 25-year-old establishing himself as a key figure, it is unlikely that he will join Real Madrid at all unless he pushes for a transfer.
