Real Madrid are reportedly interested in Dominic Calvert-Lewin and have joined Arsenal in pursuit of the Everton striker.
According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Arsenal are no longer the only club that are keen on signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Everton striker is also being courted by Real Madrid, with Carlo Ancelotti keen on reuniting with him at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin joined Everton from Sheffield United in the summer of 2016 and was a first-team regular in a year’s time. However, it was not until the 2019/20 season that he was finally utilised in his ideal role of a centre-forward. And this is when he began flourishing, making significant progress in his career since.
An indispensable figure for Everton now, the 24-year-old is also a regular feature in the English national squad. Calvert-Lewin started the ongoing campaign strongly as well, with three goals in as many games before being sidelined with a toe injury. His progress, though, has not gone unnoticed with Arsenal and Real Madrid hot on his trails.
Arsenal are in a precarious situation over the future of Alexandre Lacazette, who appears set to run down his contract before departing the Emirates as a free agent next summer unless he is sold by the Gunners in the January transfer window. In addition, Eddie Nketiah is also in the final year of his deal and unlikely to be offered a renewal.
With that in mind, it is imperative that Arsenal sign a striker to replace Lacazette, especially with captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the wrong side of 30. Calvert-Lewin, to that end, is a viable target for the north Londoners, who are prioritising a move for him. Arsenal, though, now have Real Madrid for competition in his pursuit.
The Merengues are reported to be viewing Erling Haaland as their priority target, as far as the centre-forward slot is concerned. However, with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Barcelona hot on his trails, it will be prudent of Real Madrid to keep their options open.
To that end, Calvert-Lewin is a viable target for Los Blancos, who might still be well served making a move for the Everton striker, seeing as Mariano Diaz and Luka Jovic could be sold soon. And Real Madrid might just fancy their chances of snapping up the 24-year-old, considering just how much he grew in stature under Carlo Ancelotti’s tutelage.
For now, the race to sign Calvert-Lewin is heating up constantly and Real Madrid’s entry into the picture could well complicate matters for Arsenal. It remains to be seen where the English striker ends up and whether he even calls it quits at Everton anytime soon.
