Alex McLeish urges Kurt Zouma to join David Moyes’ West Ham United instead of Tottenham as he seeks a move away from Chelsea.
The transfer window is getting busier as we approach deadline day, and there could be a transfer battle between London clubs for Kurt Zouma. The Frenchman is seeking an exit from Chelsea, who will likely sign Jules Kounde before the month’s end. The centre-back wants to remain in London and has plenty of options.
Lately, Tottenham have expressed an interest in signing him as have West Ham United, although Zouma is still evaluating his options. He rejected the idea of moving abroad earlier in the window when Chelsea reportedly floated the idea of including him in a deal for Kounde.
Spurs have already signed Cristian Romero from Atalanta, although they seek another experienced centre-back, and Zouma fits the bill. Tottenham are also willing to pay Chelsea’s £25 million asking price and remain an exciting option for the Frenchman, although West Ham aren’t far away.
The Hammers have an ageing backline, and David Moyes wishes to sign a centre-back of a younger profile. The club are still looking at options after failing to land earlier targets such as Nikola Milenkovic from Fiorentina. They also like Aston Villa’s Kortney Hause, although they would jump at the chance to sign a player like Zouma.
The Frenchman has been a part of Chelsea teams that won the Premier League before and last season’s Champions League-winning side under Thomas Tuchel. In terms of Premier League experience, he has plenty and, without a doubt, fits into these Tottenham or West Ham teams.
While a final decision is expected to come before the transfer window ends, Alex McLeish has suggested the Frenchman chose West Ham over Tottenham. The former Scotland national side boss stated that the Hammers under Moyes are exciting to join in the current scenario.
Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish said, “I know West Ham had a brilliant season last year. They look as though they’ve started on fire this season. Can they go further? Have they got the potential to do even more and be consistently up there? You would think that they definitely have the resources to back the manager.
“I would have thought that Zouma might think Spurs are rebuilding. He may feel that’s his preference. But if I was going for a team with potential, West Ham are really looking absolutely tremendous.”
There’s some logic in McLeish’ words, as West Ham did have a better season than Tottenham, considering both teams’ overall quality. The Hammers are certainly looking at more signings before the end of the window, and Zouma’s addition will only strengthen their squad for the current season.
