Jason McAteer has been left ‘perplexed’ by Manchester City’s signing of Jack Grealish, suggesting the club realistically doesn’t need him.
Manchester City smashed the British transfer record after signing Jack Grealish recently. The Premier League champions could yet break this record again if they sign striker Harry Kane from Tottenham, who are demanding around £150 million for the England captain.
Recent reports suggested that Manchester City could be prepared to make an incredible £127 million offer for Kane, as the transfer saga could drag till the end of the current window. If they do manage to get the striker, then they might have spent well over £200 million on two players alone, and few have been left surprised by their actions.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp recently criticised Pep Guardiola for having an open kitty to spend on transfers, to which the Catalan hit back. Many have criticised Man City’s incredible spending power and the lack of intervention from Financial Fair Play regulators.
Guardiola hit back at Klopp and other critics by suggesting they prove their accusations. However, the manager could draw further criticisms if they do end up signing Harry Kane. The Catalan had previously indicated that his club could not afford a £100 million striker, and ironically Man City remain the only club linked with the Spurs star.
After those comments surfaced, City signed Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for exactly £100 million. Guardiola even suggested that the move for Grealish was offset by sales worth £60 million and that City had only to invest £40 million to acquire him.
Sticking with Grealish, one of Liverpool’s former midfielder Jason McAteer has come out to criticise the signing, suggesting City don’t need him at the moment. Quotes published in the Mirror suggests McAteer is utterly ‘perplexed’ with the way Man City have conducted business.
McAteer said, “I don’t get the Grealish signing as to where he plays, and I don’t get the price tag. I’m perplexed by it. I just think they are a team who have got endless pots of cash who can say ‘we want him and we’ll get him.”
There could be more criticism coming their way. Sure they have made massive moves in the market, and Guardiola alone has spent just under a billion on transfers since he arrived at the club. But if the club can prove they have done it, playing by the rules, then there’s no argument there.
